Wie beim Aufwärtswandler wird der Leistungsschalter durch ein pulsbreitenmoduliertens Signal angesteuert, das ihn entweder in den leitenden oder in den sperrenden Zustand versetzt. Während des leitenden Zustands fließt der Eingangsstrom ItEin über den Schalter und die Induktivität zum Ausgang. Während dieser Phase wird der Strom von der Induktivität begrenzt und in Folge dessen lädt sich die Induktivität auf. In der sperrenden Phase entlädt sich die Induktivität und erzeugt einen Stromfluss ID durch die Freilaufdiode. Anschaulicher könnte man sagen, dass der Leistungsschalter den Stromfluss von Eingangsseite zu Ausgangsseite „zerhackt“ (Chopper) und die Induktivität den Mittelwert der Spannung über die Zeit bildet, so dass bei konstanter Last immer die gewünschte Ausgangsspannung UOut mit dem Pulsbreitenverhältnis eingestellt werden kann.
 Sehr oft wird diese Schaltung für die Spannungsversorgung von Prozessoren und deren Peripherie
 eingesetzt, da diese bei einem hohen Strombedarf (1-40A) sehr niedrige Spannungen (1,17 bis 3,3 Volt) benötigen. Im Prinzip kann diese Schaltung überall dort einsetzt werden, wo man auch einen Längsregler einsetzen kann, aber ein besserer Wirkungsgrad benötigt wird.
 
 
 Als Vorteile sind hier der leichte Aufbau und die geringe Anzahl an Bauteilen zu nennen. Die Halbleiter müssen nur maximal für die Eingangsspannung ausgelegt sein. Es wird nur ein einziges PWM-Signal benötigt, was die Ansteuerung erheblich vereinfacht. Der Wirkungsgrad befindet sich im Bereich von 80 bis 95%, solange die Ein- und Ausgangsspannung sich nicht um das Zehnfache unterscheiden. Für diese Topologie existieren zahlreiche Regler und Controller, die dem Entwickler die Aufgabe der PWM-Signalerzeugung und der Regelung abnehmen.
 
 Die Ausgangsspannung stellt sich proportional zum Tastverhältnis ein (verlustfrei). UOut = d* UIn * TV ; IOut / IIn = UIn /UOut
